My name is Myles Maxie, and I want to help.
Standing up for what I believe in has been the reality of my life since my youth. As a Black male growing up in the suburbs of California, I had many experiences of overcoming the expectations that others had of me. I constantly had to advocate for myself and my needs, and was taught how to from a young age by my support system. In the face of adversity, I learned what it meant to overcome, to challenge authority, and to lead empathically, with morals and values. I have channelled this in my life through my work representing the needs of campus constituencies, supporting the education of and social growth of youth, creating programs working towards change, and generally making the environments I find myself in better.
For many people, these experiences would have left them burnt out; for me, these experiences made me want to find ways to create change. In every community I have found myself in, I have found myself working as an advocate for those around me for the sake of a better and stronger community. Ranging from being an advocate for racial justice, speaking out on issues of equity, championing for those without a voice, or simply supporting those who need a voice, my goal has always been to empower others, and that will continue for decades to come.
One of my personal philosophies in life has been to give back to the community what I have received myself. Although I am young, I have had the pleasure and privilege of having immense access to assistance and guidance in my educational, professional and social endeavors. This has come from family, friends, and mentors, both past and present. I thank all of them for their work and for teaching me how to be the person I am today– a person who cares.
Through the experiences I have been able to have, I have developed a unique toolset in terms of how I can approach issues small and large of today and now have an opportunity to begin this process of giving back. I am here to help. I am here to connect. I am here to be what others were to me. Hope to meet you soon!
